A New School Year and a New PAC

Please join us for the first Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meeting of the year. All parents and grandparents welcome. Come meet the PAC executive and the school administrators and learn about upcoming events and what’s new at Dorothy Lynas this year. Learn about where your PAC dollars will be going this year.

We will meet in the multipurpose room at 7:00 pm on Monday, September 16, light refreshments will be served. Come meet other parents, staff and administrators. We can’t wait to see you, and the meeting will end at 8:00.

Fire Destroys Home, Help Needed

Let’s rally to help one of our own. Lisa Williams recently lost her home and suffered burns to her body. Her son is a Dorothy Lynas Dragon and we know they could both use our support. A Go Fund Me account has been set up and we encourage our families to help out in any way they can.

Multi-Family Garage Sale

Thank you everyone who supported our Spring Carnival! It was a huge success and we couldn’t have done it without all of you. At Dorothy Lynas there is never a dull moment and we are now preparing for our next big event, the multi-family garage sale on Friday June 7.

Where: Dorothy Lynas gymnasium

When: Friday June 7th (after fun day) 6 – 8pm

Why: to raise funds for the Class of 2019 Legacy Gift

The Class of 2019 is raising money for a Legacy Gift for Dorothy Lynas.  On Friday June 7th we will be hosting a multi-family garage sale in the gym. Purchase one of 20 tables for $25 (via MunchaLunch) and those proceeds will go towards the 2019 Legacy Gift.  Whatever you sell, you keep the proceeds! This is a great opportunity to clear your home of toys, sporting good and other items your family doesn’t use or need any more! Tip: delegate the work by involving your children in gathering what they are willing to part with.

Reserve your garage sale table on MunchaLunch between May 29th – June 6th. Due to space restrictions, there are only 20 tables, so it will be first-come first-serve. Once all the tables are sold out, sign-up on Muncha Lunch will be removed.

We are also looking for help promoting this event. If you or your students can make posters and post them around the school and our local community, please do so!

June 7th Garage Sale Timeline

5:00pm – Set up tables. All families who purchased a table are required to help.

5:30pm – Sellers display their stuff and get ready

6 pm – 8pm – Garage Sale doors open!

8:00 – 8:30pm – Clean up and strike tables/put away. All families who purchased a table will help. Do not leave any items behind.


10 Tips for an Amazing Day at the Carnival

Only one more sleep until the Dorothy Lynas Spring Carnival. Events begin at 12pm and run until 3:00pm. Here are ten tips to make the day successful:

  1. Bring cash. We are old school and will not be able to accept bit coin, debt or credit!
  2. Don’t forget a towel if you plan on participating in the foam dance party.
  3. Your children are your responsibility, please supervise them!
  4. There will be reptiles thanks to West Coast Exotics!
  5. Parking is very limited so plan on walking in.
  6. If you are volunteering you will earn 5 free tickets.
  7. Wear sunscreen, the weather looks great.
  8. Please bring a refillable water bottle, the planet will thank you.
  9. Have fun!
  10. Please thank a volunteer, they are amazing!

Three Things To Do Today

  1. Mark your calendar and plan to attend the final PAC meeting and AGM of the school year. It is this Monday, May 27 in the Multipurpose room. We will start promptly at 7:00 and their will be snacks! You will have the opportunity to hear from Mrs. Wheatley about the class placement process and how students are organized into classes to create optimal learning environments. Additionally, you will get a sneak peak at the after school programs we are hoping to offer next year, have the opportunity to learn about next year’s budget, and provide your input on the field trip fund. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
  2. Sign-up to volunteer for the Dorothy Lynas Carnival. The carnival takes place next Saturday, June 1 from 12-3. It is a big undertaking and our kids are really looking forward to it. Please sign-up to help. Sign-up here using this link. Dorothy Lynas has approximately 600 students enrolled and we have 150 volunteer positions to fill. We have currently filled just over half…that’s only about 80 of you! We know you are out there, so please sign-up.
  3. Find a few bottles to donate to the adult bottle table. While the carnival is mostly for the children, this station is just for us! Please drop off any bottle donations to the office as soon as possible. While you are out this weekend, pick up an extra bottle of wine, beer, or cider to donate. We will also accept non-alcoholic items like bbq sauce, lotion, olive oils, perfume, or any other unopened bottle.

The weather is kinda crummy right now, so there are no excuses not to support Dorothy Lynas!

Sign-Up Now!

The Dorothy Lynas Carnival takes place on Saturday, June 1 from 12-3. Our kids are counting down the days and we need your help to make sure it is successful! Please sign-up to volunteer an hour or two of your time or to donate a cake for the cake walk. If you have first aid training (calling all you doctors, nurses, firefighters, and heroes out there) we particularly need you to be a first aid attendant for an hour or two.

Thank you to all of you who have signed up, your next job is to please make sure the weather cooperates and we have sunshine in the forecast!

We Want You…

Looking for an exciting way to spend a Monday evening? Well, search no longer! Monday, May 27 is the final PAC meeting of the year, and bonus, it is also our AGM (annual general meeting). The meeting starts at 7:00pm in the multipurpose room and everyone is welcome. At this meeting you will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear from the principal and vice-principal about how class placements are completed
  • Learn about the PAC budget for 2019/2020. Did you know our budget is over $70,000?
  • Have the opportunity to make an impact by volunteering on the PAC

We currently have three positions on the PAC executive that are open and we are hoping to fill them with keen, passionate parents wishing to make a positive contribution. No experience required and current members are happy to support a smooth transition.

The following positions are open next year:

PAC Chair, responsibilities include:

  • Chairing the PAC meetings (one meeting every two months)
  • Delegating and liaising with various committees
  • Liaising with school administration
  • Over seeing the budget and signing cheques
  • Connecting with PAC members

PAC Vice-Chair, responsibilities include:

  • Attending PAC meetings (one meeting every two months)
  • Supporting the PAC chair
  • Working with various committees
  • Over seeing the budget and signing cheques
  • Connecting with PAC members

PAC Secretary, responsibilities include:

  • Attending PAC meetings (one meeting every two months)
  • Taking meeting minutes
  • Creating and circulating PAC agenda
  • Monitoring and managing school email

Our PAC is a great opportunity to get to know more about the school, meet new parents, show your children that school is important, and support the school and our community. Some of the great things that the PAC supports include:

  • Grade 7 Promotional events

The PAC is proud to work closely with the staff and Dorothy Lynas to support and enrich the learning opportunities for all of our children. Please consider attending our meeting and learning more about ways that you can help our children too!

Carnival Call!

Calling all parents and caregivers! The annual Dorothy Lynas Carnival is coming soon and we need your help to make it happen. This is a wondeful community event that also helps raise funds for our school. This year’s carnival will take place on Saturday, June 1 from 12-3pm. Here are three ways to get involved and help support our school:


  1. Donate to the adult bottle table! Bring your donations to the school office. We are looking for donations of beer, wine, spirits along with non-alcoholic bottles too! Donate a favourite bottle of BBQ sauce, shampoo, salad dressing, body lotion, or bubble bath. All bottles welcome!
  2. Sign-up to bring a cake for the cake walk. Calling all expert and novice bakers, we want your creations. The cake walk is always a favourite because we have so many amazing baked goods on offer. All donations can be dropped off the night before or the morning of the carnival.
  3. Sign-up on the day of the carnival. We need parents helping with the bouncey castle, popcorn machine, ticket selling, clean up and set up, first aid, and so much more. Sign up for an hour and give back to the community. Sign-up with a friend and make it even more fun! The on-line sign-up will be active shortly.

Our Dorothy Lynas Carnival is such a highlight for our children, and we couldn’t do it without your help. Please show your support volunteer!

Come Join the Fun!

Mark you calendars, Saturday, June 1 is the Dorothy Lynas Carnival. You won’t want to miss this exciting tradition.

For all of you who would like to help us make the carnival extra special, please join the organizing committee, everyone welcome (no previous carny experience required). We will be meeting this Tuesday, April 30 at 7:00pm at Dorothy Lynas. Bring a friend and make it even more fun. We could really use your help. See you Tuesday!

It’s Carnival Time!

Dorothy Lynas Carnival is just around the corner and is such an eagerly anticipated event for our students and the community. Carnival games, rides, food, and so much more make this such a fun day. The carnival is also an important fund raiser for the PAC and allows us to fund items like field trips, guest speakers, new technology, and gym equipment.

Please consider joining our organizing committee. We need a small group of parents to help with running this event. We have a really efficient system in place for everything that needs to happen in order for this event to be a success we just need some parents to help fill the committee.
