Scholarship update & PAC Meeting Wed May 18th

This month, your PAC awarded a total of $2,000 in annual scholarships to four graduating students of Windsor Secondary and Seycove Secondary Schools. While the individual schools select the scholarship recipients, they are all awarded to prior graduates of Dorothy Lynas Elementary. Those students continuing in the French Immersion program attend Windsor, and those remaining in, or converting to, the English program attend Seycove.

Last year, each school awarded two $500 scholarships on our behalf.   To their credit, each of the four scholarship recipients sent our PAC well written notes of appreciation. Congratulations to them all!

Many parents likely do not know that all PAC’s in British Columbia can apply each year for a Grant from the Gaming Commission – that is, a distribution of a portion of the lottery system profits. The Grant is $20 per student and being the largest Elementary school in the District of North Vancouver, we receive almost $12,000 each year. There are some restrictions on what the funds can be used for, and any amounts not spent within three years has to be returned to the Gaming Commission. One of the many permitted uses of the Grant is the awarding of scholarships! A win-win if we ever saw one.Safeteen

Please join us Wednesday, May 18th from 7:00 – 8:00 pm for our next PAC Meeting. Principal Arlie Thompson and Vice Principal Megan Wheatley will be taking our School Visioning Exercise one step further…..come learn what our students, parents and staff have revealed about Dorothy Lynas Elementary! We will also present the first draft of the 2016/2017 budget. If you’d like to know how our PAC finances work or want a say in how our PAC funds are spent, please come, as we welcome your input.
