Fall Community Updates

VOTE FOR YOUR SCHOOL TRUSTEE –  NOVEMBER 15, 2014

Yael Drinkle is a member of our school community and is running for School Trustee in the District of North Vancouver in the upcoming municipal election on November 15th. Our part of the District has not had representation in the School Board since 2009 so we are excited that Yael is running.

Yael has been an active member of the Dorothy Lynas PAC, where she has been involved as Events and Communications Coordinator for the past 3 years. During her time with the PAC, Yael was instrumental in increasing school and community involvement at school events as well streamlining the way that our PAC communicates with parents through the creation of new systems including a new PAC website.

To learn more about Yael’s background and priorities, please visit her website or follow her on Facebook.  You can also hear more about Yael’s School Board related issues at the upcoming All Candidates Meetings:

  • North Vancouver Teacher’s Association is hosting an All Candidates Meeting on Wednesday October 29th, from 7 to 9 pm, at Argyle Secondary School, for School Board Trustee candidates in the District.
  • North Vancouver PAC is hosting an All Candidates Meeting on Thursday November 6th, from 7 to 9 pm, at Sutherland Secondary School, for School Board Trustee candidates in both the City and District.

November 15th is Election Day – please consider supporting this local candidate, and most importantly, get out and vote!

SEYCOVE AUCTION: BORN TO BE WILD

Born to be WildFor 33 years the Seycove Auction has been a successful community event raising funds for the Seycove Family of Schools (Ecole Dorothy Lynas, Seycove Secondary, Cove Cliff Elementary and Sherwood Park Elementary). This much-loved North Shore event brings together the community with the common goal of enhancing educational opportunities for our children.

There are many ways to participate in this event and one of the most important is to become an Event Sponsor. This is a great opportunity for businesses to raise their profile in the community and help benefit the schools.

Funds raised go toward scholarships, music and drama programs, computer hardware and software, library books, sports and athletics.

We are presently looking for Volunteers in the following areas:

  • Acquisitions
  • Donation Organizer
  • Ticket/table/seating organizer
  • Admin/checkout for the night of the event

The “Brick by Brick” Drive: Help Build a School

Hello Dorothy Lynas Families:

This year DL’s Free the Children Committee has been very diligent with their efforts.  They raised $900 for the Philippine Relief Fund, collected a truckload of food for the Harvest Project, collected $400 for the One Drop Foundation, filled a foyer full of clothes for Big Brothers and they even remained silent for a full day to raise awareness for the children around the world who do not have a voice.

Their final project is now underway.  It is called the Brick By Brick drive.  They are raising funds to help build a school in a Third World Country.  We all know the extreme value of education in a society; the purpose of this drive is to give a village the gift of education and a positive future.

bbb The concept is to collect money that will go towards bricks for a schoolhouse.  The cost of one brick is $20.  For every $20 raised, a brick will be added to the front foyer’s display.  The end goal is to get as close to a full schoolhouse as possible.  While they are fundraising for only two weeks this year, they will be able to continue the efforts next year.  Some key points are as follows:

  • Any donation is accepted, large or small
  • Multiple kids can donate together to buy a brick
  • Outside donations are accepted as well
  • There is no obligation for anybody to donate

The Free the Children Committee would like to thank everybody for all of their support this year and they look forward to continuing the positive momentum created over the last two years into next year.

Sincerely,
Peter Williams and the Free the Children Committee
