New PAC Initiatives: Food Drive & Field Trip Fund

The PAC is pleased to announce our first Allergy Friendly Food Drive Challenge from Nov 21-Dec 2, 2016. Food Allergy Canada and Canadian race car driver, Alex Tagliani, are promoting food allergy awareness and safety this holiday season by calling on schools to help collect allergy-friendly food items to support local food banks/charitable organizations in our school communities across the country.

By participating in this challenge, our school will also be entered for a chance to win a grand prize of Fifteen Apple iPad Air 2- 16GB and a meet-and-greet with Alex Tagliani at our school! While the prize is a nice incentive, our primary motive for joining is the opportunity not only to increase awareness of allergy issues but also to provide food for people in need in our community.

Here’s how it will work: We will be designating each day of the challenge to one of the top priority food allergens and will ask students to bring in a product that does NOT contain that allergen. Further details will be communicated through the PAC website and class reps later this week. Any questions, please contact DL Parent

Another new PAC initiative is the PAC Field Trip Fund which was recently announced in the DL November Newsletter.

The PAC has set aside a fund of $20,000 which will be divided evenly between each division. The fund is meant to alleviate financial pressures for parents & staff with regard to field trip fees and to help finance transportation assistance if required. Parents will not be charged for field trips while there are still funds in the classroom account to cover costs. Please note this fund does not apply to Outdoor School, Big House or Transition Programs.

As a pilot program, our ideal outcome is that the Field Trip Fund is received positively by both staff and parents in its inaugural year so that we are able to offer it in subsequent years. A big thank you to our DL families for your generous financial donations which have allowed us to create this fund. If you have any questions or require further information, please contact

Thank You

To our 100+ DL Parents for attending our first ever Pub Night & supporting our ticket sales, raffles and auction, to our local retail and professional community for their generous donations and to our energetic, super-multi-tasking Events & Social Committee Chair, Crystal Gerling – the PAC thanks you for all your support in bringing together our DL Community and raising funds for the benefit of our staff and students. We hope you all had an enjoyable evening.

Stay tuned for details on our next DL Spirit Event which will take place in January 2017!

Please Note: The PAC section of the DL November Newsletter mentioned that information will no longer be communicated through the Class Reps. This is incorrect. We will continue to communicate information to our DL Families via the Class Reps as well as through the DL website and our weekly Blog Posts.

Have a great week!

We have had the pleasure of getting to know Rahim well this past year as he has attended many of our PAC meetings and we look forward to working together as a team in 2016/2017. Please take a few minutes to read Rahim’s Welcome Letter to all DL Families.

We are thrilled that our former PAC Chair, Craig McMahon along with DL Fundraising Chair/Member-at-Large, Suzanne Siemens will both step into the role of Vice Co-Chairs. Wayne Audette remains our Treasurer, Shaireen Sayani remains as Secretary/PAC Communications and Jason Brunelle, Crystal Gerling (DL Events & Social Committee Chair) & Emina Dervisevic (CPF Dorothy Lynas Chair and CPF BC Chapter President) have committed to us again this year as Members-at-Large.

We thank former PAC Vice-Chair, Cassandra Hall, for her years of leadership in the PAC Executive. And to Cheryl Learmonth – one of the founding members of the DL PAC & long-time member of the PAC Executive – our sincere gratitude to you for your ongoing dedication to the DL Community and for the many years of guidance you have given to us all.

follow-the-rulesPub Night is Friday, Nov 4th – Booked your tickets?  Booked a sitter?  Booked your transportation? An important message from DL Parent, Holly How are you getting to and from Pub Night? Get home safely with a super awesome designated driver. Or if everyone in your group is drinking, no worries! Call North Shore Taxi (604) 922-2222 or Sunshine Cabs (604) 987-3333. They will take you home whatever the time. Thanks for keeping our roads safe and for setting a good example to our kids about responsible drinking. Cheers!

An equally important message from our Social Committee & Events Chair, Crystal:

Pub Rules: To ensure you have a fun-filled evening, let’s set up a few ground rules.

1. Don’t Worry. Your kid(s) are fine…. actually better than fine because they are likely breaking all the rules with babysitter…. so relax and enjoy.

2. Don’t talk about the kids. You are here to meet adults and to get to know some new parents. Find out about their jobs or hobbies. Talk sports, current events, anything adult….that is why we are here.

3. Have an AMAZING evening.

4. Lastly, after an amazing evening Get Home Safely. For some, that may mean a short stumble home and for others, a cab ride. But for a lucky few, make a call to your teenager to come pick you up (payback time). Let’s keep the roads safe and let’s keep our parents social and sane 🙂

iWalk to school week is Oct 3-7

iwalk_tagline_colorInternational Walk (iWalk) to School Week will take place October 3rd-7th  at DL this year. This week long event gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event to celebrate the many benefits of walking or otherwise getting to school in active ways. We at DL would like to be a part of iWalk to promote health and community around our school as well as reducing emissions.

We encourage you to get creative and find ways to get to school without driving up to the front steps or down one of our busy side streets. If you must drive, consider arranging to meet a group and walk in, make a plan to carpool with another family, or just park a 5-10 minute walk away. Your school and your body will thank you for it!

During iWalk week, Volunteer Parents will hand out orange paper tokens* to each child who walks, bikes, scooters, carpools, parks away from the school and walks in, takes the bus, rides a bike etc. These tokens will be collected by their teacher and recorded in each classroom. The classroom that collects the most tokens will win the coveted Golden Scooter (our iWalk Trophy).

*Tokens can be picked up either near the front entrance of the school or at the playground closest to the MPR.

Mark you calendar and start planning your routes!

Volunteers Parents  – can you spare 15 minutes one morning to hand out tokens? If yes, please contact us at (shift is only 8:30-8:45 any day of the week, you choose).
