Welcome Letter from our new PAC Chair and Why we are already counting down to Friday…..

warm-welcomeThe PAC Executive is pleased to introduce you to our New PAC Chair, Rahim Rajan. We have had the pleasure of getting to know Rahim well this past year as he has attended many of our PAC meetings and we look forward to working together as a team in 2016/2017. Please take a few minutes to read Rahim’s Welcome Letter to all DL Families.

We are thrilled that our former PAC Chair, Craig McMahon along with DL Fundraising Chair/Member-at-Large, Suzanne Siemens will both step into the role of Vice Co-Chairs. Wayne Audette remains our Treasurer, Shaireen Sayani remains as Secretary/PAC Communications and Jason Brunelle, Crystal Gerling (DL Events & Social Committee Chair) & Emina Dervisevic (CPF Dorothy Lynas Chair and CPF BC Chapter President) have committed to us again this year as Members-at-Large.

We thank former PAC Vice-Chair, Cassandra Hall, for her years of leadership in the PAC Executive. And to Cheryl Learmonth – one of the founding members of the DL PAC & long-time member of the PAC Executive – our sincere gratitude to you for your ongoing dedication to the DL Community and for the many years of guidance you have given to us all.

Pub Rules: To ensure you have a fun-filled evening, let’s set up a few ground rules.

1. Don’t Worry. Your kid(s) are fine…. actually better than fine because they are likely breaking all the rules with babysitter…. so relax and enjoy.

2. Don’t talk about the kids. You are here to meet adults and to get to know some new parents. Find out about their jobs or hobbies. Talk sports, current events, anything adult….that is why we are here.

3. Have an AMAZING evening.

4. Lastly, after an amazing evening Get Home Safely. For some, that may mean a short stumble home and for others, a cab ride. But for a lucky few, make a call to your teenager to come pick you up (payback time). Let’s keep the roads safe and let’s keep our parents social and sane 🙂

We need 10 volunteers to help hand out frozen treats and oversee some fun games we have planned for the kids at the Welcome Back Halloween Party this Friday starting at 6:30. Come in costume! The kids have been working away on their artwork the past 2 weeks, so expect to see their masterpiece and an order form coming home soon. All orders can be placed and paid for online – deadline for orders is October 31st. For more details on pricing and products visit The Card Project.

With the holidays coming up this is a wonderful way to stay in touch with friends & family with many gift possibilities as well.

 

 


IWALK_logoThe results are in….the winner of the iWalk Golden Scooter is…..E04 Mr Shynkaryk’s Gr 4/5 class. A big thank you from the PAC to all students and staff for their participation in this event and especially to DL parents for taking the time to accompany their kids to school in various ways to help reduce traffic while keeping our kids active & involved in their community. The presentation of the trophy will take place in Mr Shynkaryk’s classroom in the coming weeks, congratulations to E04!


Help bullhornCall Back needs your help!  When you call the DL Absence Line at 604.903.3435 to report your child’s absence, what happens next?

Step in Call Back Volunteer! Our dedicated crew helps the office staff daily to keep track of the children that are away or late so everyone is accounted for.   They listen to the messages and track attendance for each student.  If they cannot account for a student, they will call the contact number to verify.

Being part of the Call Back team does not take a large commitment.  Only one or two days a month and about an hour each time.  Yes, that’s it! The more people who help, the better the team can assist the office staff and teachers.  It is a great way to get to know the students, staff and parents. Bring an old one to trade (or a small coin donation) and we will suit you up. Come enjoy the music and treats while mingling with other DL families. This Spirit Event is a favourite for all ages, you don’t want to miss it!

Orange tokens? it’s iWalk Week! Some new events too!

It’s iWalk to school week! Look out for Volunteer Parents between 8:30-8:45 am handing out orange paper tokens* to each child who walks, bikes, scooters, carpools, parks away from the school and walks in, takes the bus, rides a bike etc. Hang on to these tokens as they will be collected by their teacher and recorded in each classroom. The classroom that collects the most tokens will win the coveted Golden Scooter (our iWalk Trophy).

*Tokens can be picked up either near the front entrance of the school or at the playground closest to the MPR.

 


Windsor Secondary Fundraising Gala is Saturday, October 15th

Get together with friends and neighbors for Windsor’s Gala Night. Featuring a live band, dinner, dance, silent auction and dessert auction….all funds raised will go towards 3 new student study and workspace areas created through the Windsor seismic upgrade renovation. Tickets available here!

PAC Parent’s Night at Seymour’s Pub – get your tickets now!

The DL Social Committee is pleased to present PAC Parent’s Night at Seymour’s Pub, Friday November 4th.  This is a great opportunity to meet other DL parents, build a sense of community and help raise funds for the school in a fun and casual environment. Tickets are $25 – that gets you in the door at Seymour’s Pub and $15 towards food & beverages.

50-50-raffle-burst-dndz75-clipartWe will be having 50/50 draws and a Silent Auction. After all that is done, Seymour’s has a DJ and you can continue the party until 2am! Spread the word, but tickets are limited – so here’s what to do:

  1. After reading this post, go directly to the Munch-a-Lunch website.
  2. Login and go to the “Fundraising Open!” tab at the top of your screen.
  3. Select how many tickets you would like to purchase and follow through with your payment directly online.
  4. Start organizing childcare immediately (or should you have done that before you purchased the tickets? oh well!)
  5. Most important of all – organize how to get to and from the venue responsibly.

Seymour’s Pub is located in the Holiday Inn Hotel, 720 Lillooet Rd #210, North Vancouver.  Doors open at  7pm- come early so you can participate in the 50/50 and Silent Auction which will close at 9pm.

iWalk to school week is Oct 3-7

iwalk_tagline_colorInternational Walk (iWalk) to School Week will take place October 3rd-7th  at DL this year. This week long event gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event to celebrate the many benefits of walking or otherwise getting to school in active ways. We at DL would like to be a part of iWalk to promote health and community around our school as well as reducing emissions.

 We encourage you to get creative and find ways to get to school without driving up to the front steps or down one of our busy side streets. If you must drive, consider arranging to meet a group and walk in, make a plan to carpool with another family, or just park a 5-10 minute walk away. Your school and your body will thank you for it!

Starting Monday Sept 19th through Sept 27th, place your kids’ lunch orders on the Munch-a-Lunch online system here . For those of you who are new to the school, we offer a variety of healthy lunch options like sushi, pizza, wraps, frozen yogurt, fresh juices plus a surprise new vendor that all the kids are sure to love this year.

We are excited to have volunteer Gr 6 and 7 students making deliveries to the classrooms starting Oct 6th, but we need more help with set up, prep and clean up. The Munch-a-Lunch system lets you sign up for Volunteer opportunities online and while you are there, remember to update your family’s contact information for the DL Online Student Directory. Once we have received all the updated contact information, the directory will be available to all those who have opted to share their information.

As always, thank you to our amazing Fun Foods Team who have worked over the summer to make sure DL’s largest fundraiser runs smoothly year round!


DL PAC Presents: Dr Lynn Miller – Wednesday, October 19th, 7:00-8:30 pm

The Prevention and Early Intervention of Childhood Anxiety

Lynn D. Miller, Ph. D., Lic. Psychologist (Colorado) is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Education and Counseling Psychology and Special Education department at the University of British Columbia. She started her career as a classroom teacher, and then worked as a school counselor K-12. She held several research grants examining the effects of empirically supported approaches to child anxiety in the public school system.

Dr Miller has consulted to the FRIENDS program, an evidence-based curriculum based on cognitive behaviour principles, targeting anxiety. She conducted research on other models of anxiety prevention programs in schools, including Taming Worry Dragons, Skills for Social and Academic Success, Cool Little Kids, as well as an enhanced program for Aboriginal children. She completed her term as President of the Anxiety Disorders Assoc. of Canada, 2010-2014, and served as the President of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (2004-2006).
