Helping our children navigate social media

Are you wondering if and when social media will have an impact on your child? Having a hard time keeping up with all the new applications and websites that your children are going to be exposed to? What can we do as parents to proactively help our children navigate social media safely?

iStock_000017509927Medium KidsThe Dorothy Lynas PAC is pleased to have local expert and renowned national speaker Jesse Miller of Mediated Reality give a session to parents on how social media is changing the world. His topics will include:

  • Parenting the Mobile Device Child
  • The Changing Landscape of Social Media and
  • Cyber bullying

Jesse will also being holding sessions with all the Dorothy Lynas intermediate students (Grades 4 to 7), so he can share what he learned and heard talking to our children!

Jesse’s goal for us is to learn how we can help our children become smart, aware and ethical social media participants who communicate a positive message and build an online reputation that will help them into the next stages of life.

kid appsDate: January 19th, 2016

Time: 7:00 – 8:00pm (following the 6-7 pm PAC Meeting)

Location: DL Multi-Purpose Room

Reserve your seats: emaildlpac@gmail.com

Light refreshments will be served. Childcare available upon request.

Can’t make the session? Here are some other options:

  • Jesse Miller can be viewed on Global BC, CityTV and heard on several radio podcasts HERE
  • Jesse was also a featured speaker for TEDxWestVancouverED.

On a personal note, I have attended 3 of Jesse’s parenting sessions and each time has been very helpful when it comes to learning what is going on in our ever changing digital environment. I now have the knowledge and language to have meaningful conversations with my children about how they use their devices and how to stay safe online. Hope to see you at the session.

Appeal for support for River Woods housing co-op

The Dorothy Lynas community is amazing and it is inspiring to see the number of people who have stepped up to dedicate their time and resources to helping our friends in need.

Financial assistance: The River Woods housing cooperative is actively seeking financial assistance to help those displaced by the fire get set up in their temporary accommodations. BlueShore Financial has set up a trust account to assist those affected by the fire. Donations can be made to Trust Account #93052998.

The River Woods Cooperative has also set up an online Fundraising campaign HERE with a goal to raise $26,000.

Housing opportunities & other support: With dozens of families affected by the fire, the need for housing is great. If you have information about temporary housing opportunities on the North Shore, please email Parkgate Community Services Society at: information@myparkgate.com. Please provide: Your name, E-mail, Phone number and information of the housing information you have (or other ways you wish to support the affected residents)

Support for families affected by the fire

Our hearts and prayers go to everyone affected by the fire on Hamber Place last night. We know there will be a strong outpouring of support by our community.

Please know that the North Vancouver School District is working on a comprehensive plan for support. The DL PAC is waiting for instructions from the school to best coordinate how we as a community can help. Please stay tuned to find out how you can help, as we know how strong this community is!

PAC meeting & Guest Speaker Marnie Goldenberg

Our next PAC meeting has been rescheduled to Monday February 23rd where Principal Arlie Thompson will present the Technology Plan to fund hardware purchases such as iPads, projectors and laptops to support classroom and student learning. Learn what teachers are excited about and provide parent input on how you’d like to see technology support your children’s learning.

Marnie

The PAC is also pleased to bring Marnie Goldenberg, the Sexplainer, to Dorothy Lynas Elementary this same evening. A sexual health educator,  writer for Today’s Parent and regular contributor to Global TV, Marnie knows the new realities our kids are facing growing up in a highly sexualized and mediated world. Parents want and need help navigating conversations with kids where, thanks to technology, the landscape is changing at warp speed.

Join us in a conversation with Marnie to gain skills to help you confidently manage the messages your kids are receiving, and learn about the importance of talking to young people about sex in healthy ways. “Educated kids are safer kids”
