Food Drive success & Holiday Bakers please!

The DL PAC is pleased to report that our recent food drive was a success! The bins were collected from each class last week and the participation level was excellent. In fact, over 900 items of non-perishable items were received from our students! It was clear that our Dorothy Lynas families took great care in choosing items that were allergy-friendly, and there were many gluten free and organic items as well.

All of the food items collected were donated to the Harvest Project, an urban relief organization here on the North Shore. Through their various programs, Harvest Project helps individuals and families overcome difficult life circumstances so that each one can participate more fully within the North Shore community. The staff at the Harvest Project were extremely grateful for our donation, particularly for those clients with dietary concerns or food allergies.

The DL PAC would like to thank our families for their generous donations to the Harvest Project and for enthusiastically participating in this initiative to raise awareness about food allergies and safety. A huge thanks to DL parent Tracy Loree for spearheading this event and for personally delivering our donations to those in need this holiday season.

holiday-treatsHoliday Bakers!  Reminder -we are collecting treats for the 2 staff rooms this week. We will have a Class Rep at the front of the school from 8:30-8:45 each morning this week to collect your items. What a great way to show the Staff our appreciation while sharing the holiday spirit. Please let us know which day you are bringing treats so we can organize the week,

Cobs Bread (Parkgate)Raise Some Dough – As part of a commitment to the local community COBS offers DL the opportunity to participate in their Dough Raiser program to help raise money for our school.

Each time DL families purchase a product at COBS Bread Parkgate or Park & Tilford and you mention you’re raising dough for our school, COBS staff will process 5% of the total sale back to our school. DL will be presented a cheque at the end of the year. Its as easy at that so remember to mention DL at your next visit to COBS!

Chess Club needs chess sets, DL Food Drive details and Traffic Alert!

chess-boardChess Club is up and running Wednesdays at Lunch for Gr 4 and up! We’ve had such a good turn out that we don’t have enough sets to go around.

DL Families, we would appreciate donations of gently used Chess sets you are no longer using at home. Feel free to leave them at the Office for The PAC or for Mme Lynn Gonzalez (Wang) who is sponsoring this program.

A huge thank you to Mme Gonzalez for generously giving her lunchtime to supervise our budding young Chess players. As a PAC we are so grateful to our DL Staff for the extra time they give to our students through numerous in-school clubs like Chess Club, Recycling Club and the Gr 7 Tech Team, as well as sports clubs such as Cross Country, Basketball and Volleyball to name just a few.

food-allergy-canada A week to go before our Allergy Friendly Food Drive starts Monday November 21st!

Your Class Reps will be emailing a message to each class this week about which day they will be participating in the Food Drive along with the allergen-free food item they are collecting for that day. Students will also be bringing home a printed sheet for reference at home which gives parents a good opportunity to review this initiative with your family and discuss the importance of what we are trying to achieve. All food collected will be donated to the Harvest Project, a community-based urban relief organization that provides vital support for families on the North Shore.

Any questions can be forwarded to DL Parent, Tracy Loree at Thank you for your participation in this new DL initiative!

Please take some time to review this New Traffic Signage with all members of the family. When we share it with our kids, they go on high alert and will remind us of the errors that we are making!

Once you’ve taken the time to read the attached, we welcome a note at with READ IT! in the subject line. Let’s try and get 100% participation (all 346 subscribers to our PAC website!) in this effort to be more responsible with our traffic patterns. Thank you.

An important message from DL Parent, Holly How are you getting to and from Pub Night? Get home safely with a super awesome designated driver. Or if everyone in your group is drinking, no worries! Call North Shore Taxi (604) 922-2222 or Sunshine Cabs (604) 987-3333. They will take you home whatever the time. Thanks for keeping our roads safe and for setting a good example to our kids about responsible drinking. Cheers!

An equally important message from our Social Committee & Events Chair, Crystal:

Pub Rules: To ensure you have a fun-filled evening, let’s set up a few ground rules.

1. Don’t Worry. Your kid(s) are fine…. actually better than fine because they are likely breaking all the rules with babysitter…. so relax and enjoy.

2. Don’t talk about the kids. You are here to meet adults and to get to know some new parents. Find out about their jobs or hobbies. Talk sports, current events, anything adult….that is why we are here.

3. Have an AMAZING evening.

4. Lastly, after an amazing evening Get Home Safely. For some, that may mean a short stumble home and for others, a cab ride. But for a lucky few, make a call to your teenager to come pick you up (payback time). Let’s keep the roads safe and let’s keep our parents social and sane 🙂

iWalk to school week is Oct 3-7

iwalk_tagline_colorInternational Walk (iWalk) to School Week will take place October 3rd-7th  at DL this year. This week long event gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event to celebrate the many benefits of walking or otherwise getting to school in active ways. We at DL would like to be a part of iWalk to promote health and community around our school as well as reducing emissions.

We encourage you to get creative and find ways to get to school without driving up to the front steps or down one of our busy side streets. If you must drive, consider arranging to meet a group and walk in, make a plan to carpool with another family, or just park a 5-10 minute walk away. Your school and your body will thank you for it!

During iWalk week, Volunteer Parents will hand out orange paper tokens* to each child who walks, bikes, scooters, carpools, parks away from the school and walks in, takes the bus, rides a bike etc. These tokens will be collected by their teacher and recorded in each classroom. The classroom that collects the most tokens will win the coveted Golden Scooter (our iWalk Trophy).

*Tokens can be picked up either near the front entrance of the school or at the playground closest to the MPR.

Mark you calendar and start planning your routes!

Volunteers Parents  – can you spare 15 minutes one morning to hand out tokens? If yes, please contact us at (shift is only 8:30-8:45 any day of the week, you choose).
