International Walk to School Week (iWalk) is being held worldwide October 5-9. Starting Monday at DL, we encourage students in all grades to get involved and find creative ways to get to school – consider walking, biking, scootering, taking the bus, carpooling or even parking a few blocks away and walking in – your school and your body will thank you!
We would also like to encourage the students to get active by holding a friendly classroom to classroom competition. The Golden Scooter (our iWalk Trophy) will be presented to the class which best increases or improves their ability to get to school actively. Here’s how it works:
- During iWalk week we will hand out tokens (small paper shapes) to each student who gets to school actively
- The tokens can be picked up from a volunteer near the entrance to the school and handed in to the volunteer at your class (much like handing in popsicle sticks during KM club)
- These tokens will be dropped into the container on the iWalk Poster in the students’ classroom
It’s Fun! Walking, biking, scootering, etc.bring a sense of joy and independence.
Healthier Habits! The trip to school is a chance for students (and adults!) to get some daily physical activity.
Cleaner Environment! Replacing car trips to school with more active ways can reduce congestion and air-polluting emissions.
Community Benefits! Reducing traffic congestion, boosting a sense of community, and improving neighborhood connections benefit the community.
